"One of the best Energy Investments one can make at their home is to install insulation." U.S. Department of Energy

Although this is true, due to the multitude of insulating products available you should call on someone who does them all and can provide an unbiased opinion. Some of your options are:
  • Cellulose - Environmentally friendly since it is made of ground up newpapers, but it is extremely dusty and provision should be made to keep it from contaminating your living space. There are a number of chemicals used to make it fire retardant and pest resistant.  The Manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet specifically require use of a respirator when exposed to it.
  • Fiberglass - Also environmentally friendly since the majority of the product is made from recycled glass products. It has been labled as a carcinigen in several countries and the State of California. Provision should be made to keep it from contaminating your living space.
  • Spray Foam - Not as environmentally friendly, since it is a petroleum product, but is an excellant insulator and air barrier. We've had some Doctors caution against it because of its chemical makeup. If one has unknown allergies or repiratory problems it may cause some problems.
  • Soy Foam - Environmentally Friendly, since it is made from Soy Beans, but some experts have cautioned against its use because it is a food source for rodents and other pests. May act as a mold accelerator.
  • Rock Wool, Recycled Blue Jeans, other non-commercial insulations - These may be great, but use in our area is limited and they may require chemical injection to guard against pests or fire.
There is no perfect insulation.
